what to wear for headshots
We always get asked about what to wear for headshots, so let’s break it down for you.
More than anything, wear what makes you feel good with clothing that is comfortable and well tailored to your body. We suggest bringing a few outfit options so we can help you decide what looks best on camera.
Here’s a Pinterest Outfit Guide we made for you to reference.
clothing:
IMPORTANT** Don’t wear baggy clothing. It adds unnecessary bulk to your figure, which isn’t the most flattering in a 2D image.
Best to stick to neutral, muted, and earth toned colours. We want these images to be timeless and brighter colours can be distracting in photos.
If there is more than one person in your shoot with you, wear complimenting colours.
For example, varying degrees of a similar tone, or opposing colours on the colour wheel (scope this out link for reference).
The key here is to coordinate, but not to match.
Avoid primary colours and bold patterns. We’re all for subtle florals and subdued patterns, but clothing with intense markings will be distracting, drawing the eye away from you - and you’re the most important part!
Bring layers. We’ll likely add or subtract layers throughout the shoot; this will add dimension to your looks and add variety to your photographs.
For more corporate shoots, keep it semi-formal, but reflective of how you would show up to work. Business casual is always a win! Classy, yet timeless.
Try on your outfits before heading to the session to make sure everything fits you well.
Be mindful of undergarments. Underwear and bras that are tight fitting detract from clean lines of your clothing - and your gorgeous face! Having nude, seamless undergarment options is a bonus, especially with lighter coloured clothing.
jewelry:
Keep jewelry to a minimum. Trends can ebb and flow, and we want to ensure your portrait doesn’t fade with this season’s trends. Think minimal & classic.
glasses:
We want these photos to be an accurate representation of what you look like. If you wear glasses on a day-to-day basis, you can wear them during your shoot.
With a studio lighting, glasses lenses sometimes reflect a glare, so if you can pop the lenses out, that’s a bonus.
shoes:
Bring a few options if you’re unsure of what goes best with what you’re wanting to wear.
Depending on the style of our portrait session, going barefoot is sometimes an option as well.
hair & makeup:
We’re huge advocates for treating yourself to the full photoshoot experience. Check out our blog post on why we believe getting your hair and makeup done is an integral part of the process.
