How to download & use your new photos
To ensure that you take full advantage of your brand spanking new images, we’ve designed a post going over all the important steps you need to know about image resolution, back ups, sharing & more.
If you would like to read the blog on steps 1-3, choosing your images, that’s over here.
step 4: download your images & back that shit up!
Once the images ready, you will have the option to download high-res and web-size images - download them both, and save them in separate folders. Reminder that we will archive your gallery in a few months, so it’s best to download all your images right away.
Here’s an example of how we label our image folders to keep them organized:
02/14/23 - Little Mermaid branding shoot - Web Res
02/14/23 - Little Mermaid branding shoot - High Res
Now this bit is important! Make sure to back up your photos…and then back them up again. Honestly, you can never be too careful! Store a copy of the images in all of these places:
on your computer/laptop
on an external hard drive
AND online - on a cloud service Google Drive, Dropbox, Apple cloud. This way you can always get the photos back if you accidentally spill a glass of water on your computer and it sizzles out… or if you lose your external hard drive.
Better safe than sorry!
step 5: the right resolution for the job
To make sure your images look perfect wherever you share them, you need to use the proper resolution. So here’s the scoop!
Web-sized images are for displaying, you guessed it, online! This means your website, social media accounts, newsletter, etc. The web-sized images are automatically sized at 2048 pixels wide, on the long edge. This is the size we use for our own website & social content. Note that these web-sized images are not big enough to print. 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽
High resolution images are intended for print purposes. If you try to use hi-res images on your website or social media, they will be automatically compressed to fit the parameters of those platforms and the results could get distorted or pixelated. It will also take much longer for your webpage to load. The Google Gods do not want this, and neither do you. High-res are for printed materials.
There is one exception to this rule: we have chosen a purposeful perspective or crop for all your images, this is an integral part of our creative vision. That being said, if you require an extreme crop for design purposes on your website, etc. we do suggest using the higher resolution file. The web-res image with a drastic crop will result in poor resolution/pixelation.
step 6: sharing
Can you share your images across social media, blogs etc? Abso-fuckin-lutely. You can also invite people within your business to view your gallery, or simply brag to your friends by sharing the online gallery with them. Here’s a video on how to do that.
We just have a few reminders:
We love connecting with other businesses & entrepreneurs. Please tag our account when sharing to Instagram. Our handle is @ethos_imagery. We’ll be sure to cross promote you on our side as well. Sharing is caring!
Editing our images is not permitted, as this would be a misrepresentation of our art 😔. Also - Instagram filters are sooo 2014.
Please communicate this info 👆🏼 with anyone you share your gallery with.
Lastly, don’t forget to use your photos! Don’t let them sit on your computer for months and months. We know they are beautiful and precious to you, and as humans we can sometimes feel the urge to wait for the ‘perfect’ moment to share them with the world. But guess what, today is that day. We’re always game for creating a new shoot concept with you in the future!
